Disk Partition Device KernSafe Storage Center

A disk partition device exports an existing partition as an iSCSI disk. This allows a client to access the file system or raw partition content through the iSCSI target.

Creating Disk Partition Device

Follow the steps below to create a disk partition device:

Step 1. Click New on the toolbar to open the Create iSCSI Target wizard.

KernSafe iSCSI SAN - Create iSCSI target from disk partition step 1

Choose Hard Disk in the iSCSI Device Type group.

Press the Next button to continue.

KernSafe iSCSI SAN - Create iSCSI target from disk partition step 2

Choose Disk Partition in the iSCSI Disk Type group.

Press the Next button to continue.

Step 2. Configure the Disk Partition Device.

KernSafe iSCSI SAN - Create iSCSI target from disk partition step 3

Select one physical partition from the device parameter list.

The main options are:

Persistent exclusive access on this device: Prevents the local server from accessing the partition after it has been assigned to the iSCSI target. This is recommended for shared read/write use cases.
Construct MBR partition table: Builds an MBR-based virtual disk around the selected partition. MBR is widely compatible, but the maximum addressable size is 2 TB.
Construct GPT partition table: Builds a GPT-based virtual disk around the selected partition. GPT supports larger capacities and modern operating systems.

If you do not select MBR or GPT construction, the exported device is mapped as raw storage and can be repartitioned or reformatted by the initiator.

The disk created by the MBR or GPT method cannot be repartitioned later, because the partition table is fixed in the exported layout.

Step 3. Finish Creating iSCSI Target

Enter the target name.

Select an authorization mode. If you need more information, see Authorization Mechanism.

Global Authorization: The target inherits CHAP and IP filter settings from the global configuration. If this option is cleared, the target uses its own authorization settings.

Concurrent Access: Allows multiple initiators to access the target concurrently when the workload supports shared access.

Report Readonly: Reports the target as read-only when the initiator does not have write permission.

Press the Finish button to complete the iSCSI device creation.
