RAID5 Device KernSafe Storage Center

RAID5 is a software-defined advanced target that provides striped storage with distributed parity. It offers fault tolerance without duplicating all data, unlike RAID 1 or RAID 1E. One device worth of capacity is reserved for parity, so the usable capacity is always the total capacity of the set minus one member disk.

Creating RAID5 Device

Follow the steps below to create a RAID5 device:

Step 1. Open Advanced Targets and click Add to open the Create Advanced Target wizard.

KernSafe iSCSI SAN - Create RAID5 iSCSI target step 1

Choose 'Software RAID ' in the Configuration Type group.
Press the Next button to continue.

Step 2. Add simple devices to RAID5.

KernSafe iSCSI SAN - Create RAID5 iSCSI target step 2

Press Add to select simple devices.

KernSafe iSCSI SAN - Create RAID5 iSCSI target step 3

Check the devices you want to use and press Add to add them.

Note: As with hardware RAID5, the configuration requires at least three devices.

KernSafe iSCSI SAN - Create RAID5 iSCSI target step 4

Press Next to continue.

Step 3. Specify settings for the device group.

Configure the type, Stripe Size, Initialize Type.

KernSafe iSCSI SAN - Create RAID5 iSCSI target step 5

Note: RAID writes data across all member devices in stripes. Stripe Size defines the amount of sequential data written to each member before the next member is used. Initialize Type determines whether the RAID set is created from scratch or built from existing devices.

Step 4. Finish Creating iSCSI Target

KernSafe iSCSI SAN - Create RAID5 iSCSI target completed

Enter the target name.

Select an authorization mode. If you need more information, see Authorization Mechanism.

Global Authorization: The target inherits CHAP and IP filter settings from the global configuration. If this option is cleared, the target uses its own authorization settings.

Concurrent Access: Allows multiple initiators to access the target concurrently when the workload supports shared access.

Report Readonly: Reports the target as read-only when the initiator does not have write permission.

Click Finish to complete RAID5 creation.
